KATSINA, NIGERIA — Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (Rtd.), and his wife have reportedly been abducted by armed bandits following an ambush along the Matazu axis of Katsina State.

According to information circulating on Saturday, May 30, 2026, the retired military officer and his wife were travelling to Katsina in a red Peugeot 504 saloon car when heavily armed men intercepted their vehicle.

Reports indicate that the attackers opened fire during the incident, forcing the couple out of the vehicle before taking them into a nearby forest.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly escaped despite sustaining gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. The vehicle, which allegedly bore visible bullet holes, was later recovered and taken to the Matazu Divisional Police Headquarters.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the persistent security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria, particularly along major highways where kidnappings and bandit attacks have become increasingly common.

Growing Security Concerns

The reported abduction of a retired senior military officer highlights the continuing threat posed by armed criminal groups operating in several states across the region. Security analysts have repeatedly warned that banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and attacks on travellers continue to undermine public safety despite ongoing military and law enforcement operations.

Legal and Human Rights Perspective

Under Nigerian law, kidnapping is a serious criminal offence punishable by lengthy imprisonment and, in some jurisdictions, capital punishment. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria also guarantees the right to life, liberty, and security of every citizen.

Human rights advocates have consistently called on authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rural security coverage, and enhance rapid response mechanisms to protect citizens from violent criminal activities.

Conclusion

As of the time of publication, security agencies had not released an official statement on the reported abduction. Concerned citizens, security experts, and community leaders are calling for swift action to secure the safe rescue of Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife and to bring those responsible to justice.

Step Rights Magazine will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
