CDHR Reaffirms Solidarity With Cuba During Visit to Ambassador in Abuja

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights has reaffirmed its solidarity with the people of Cuba following a diplomatic visit by its leadership to the Cuban Ambassador in Abuja amid ongoing concerns over the humanitarian impact of longstanding economic sanctions on the island nation.

The National President of CDHR, Yinka Folarin, led a delegation on Friday, 8 May 2026, to the residence of the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, on Diplomatic Drive in Abuja.

The delegation included Awe Babatunde and Perez. The visit came shortly after an advocacy meeting with the Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Anthony Okon Placid, ahead of the Strategic Conference on Human Rights, Counter-Terrorism, and Sustainable Development scheduled to hold in Ekiti State from 14–16 May 2026.

During discussions with the Ambassador, the CDHR delegation expressed concern over the humanitarian conditions in Cuba and criticised what it described as the prolonged economic blockade imposed by the United States. The organisation said the sanctions had contributed to avoidable hardship and suffering among the Cuban people.

Folarin praised the resilience and revolutionary legacy of Cuba, stating that the country had continued to defend its sovereignty and social ideals despite decades of political and economic pressure.

The delegation also paid tribute to prominent figures associated with the Cuban revolutionary movement, including Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Raúl Castro, describing their sacrifices as an inspiration to oppressed people worldwide.

“Cubans must never submit to the will and wishes of the oppressors. The spirit of resistance, dignity, and liberation that Cuba represents will continue to inspire humanity. The day of liberation is near,” Folarin said during the meeting.

In her response, Ambassador Palmero thanked the CDHR delegation for the solidarity visit and assured them that their message of support would be conveyed to the people of Cuba.

The CDHR reiterated its commitment to promoting human rights, supporting oppressed communities globally, and advocating international solidarity against injustice and domination.

The statement was signed by Idris Afeez Olayinka, National Secretary of the organisation
