A Nigerian citizen returning from abroad, or any foreign visitor, may lawfully drive in Nigeria with a valid foreign driver’s license for a temporary period, provided certain conditions are met.
1. Temporary Recognition of Foreign Driver’s Licenses
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recognises valid foreign driver’s licenses for persons who are temporarily in Nigeria. This recognition is not permanent and is generally limited to 90 days from the date of entry into Nigeria.
This means a Nigerian living abroad who visits Nigeria for a holiday, family visit, or business trip may use a valid foreign driver’s license during that period.
2. Language Requirement
Where the foreign driver’s license is issued in English (such as licenses issued in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or similar countries), it is generally easier for enforcement officers to verify.

If the license is issued in another language, it should be accompanied by either:
- an official English translation, or
- a valid International Driving Permit (IDP).
3. International Driving Permit (IDP)
Although a valid English-language foreign license may be accepted during a short visit, carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with the original foreign license is strongly recommended.
The IDP serves as an internationally recognised translation of the license and helps reduce delays, misunderstandings, or disputes during routine checks by law enforcement agencies or the FRSC.
4. Staying Beyond 90 Days
If you relocate permanently to Nigeria or remain in the country for more than 90 days, your foreign driver’s license is no longer sufficient for continued driving.
To continue driving legally, you should obtain a Nigerian National Driver’s License. Depending on the country that issued your foreign license and the applicable FRSC policy, you may qualify for a license conversion process instead of applying as a first-time driver.
Practical Checklist
If you intend to drive in Nigeria with a foreign driver’s licence, you should carry:
- Your original, valid, and unexpired foreign driver’s licence.
- A valid International Driving Permit (IDP), where applicable.
- Your international passport or other proof of your date of entry into Nigeria, showing that you are still within the permitted temporary period.
